Have you ever spoiled a perfectly good sailing day by worrying about docking afterward? In this online class Captains Lisa & Andy Batchelor, writers of ASA’s new Docking and Maneuvering Made Easy textbook, cover all the factors that affect sailboat maneuverability and docking. From basic principles to specific docking scenarios for both sailing monohulls and catamarans.

We think it's important to share why we’re so passionate about teaching you what we've learned about sailing. See, we teach it because we live it. It wasn’t too long ago that we were trying to figure out how to chart our journey and set sail. We did all the research, watched the YouTube videos, and read thousands of articles and blog posts. Everyone was saying something different! It was overwhelming and made the decision to start our adventure even harder. Quite frankly, we were nearly terrified... But we didn't give up on our dream life. Through trial and error we found what works, and more importantly, what doesn’t work. Over the last few years, we’ve been able to help change thousands of people’s lives by sharing our experiences.

Docking & Maneuvering for Cruising Sailboats

Who is this class for?

This online class is suitable for all levels of sailors who’d like to improve their understanding and skills to maneuver and dock a sailboat under power. It is an excellent complement to the ASA 118 Docking course.

What Will I Learn?

Discover how a sailboat’s characteristics affect maneuverability under power, and how you can use those features to your advantage. Assess the local variable conditions to decide upon and communicate a plan of action. You will learn how to use spring lines and transits to counter the effects of wind and current. Andy and Lisa will explore several techniques to overcome mooring and docking challenges and discuss best practices for common and tricky situations.

  • Vessel features affecting maneuverability
  • Using prop wash, prop walk, prop blast
  • Impact of shaft drive vs saildrive on maneuvering
  • Single or twin rudder monohulls
  • Monohulls and catamarans
  • Effects of wind & current
  • Using transits to hold a course or station
  • Using dock lines, fenders, boat hooks
  • Practice drills: dockside, open water, limited space, close quarters
  • Docks: departing and arriving
  • Mediterranean mooring
  • Short-handed docking
  • Docking with a failed engine
